Arismeer

Arismeer is a unique holiday retreat built on a secluded, tree-covered island in a Dutch Natura 2000 nature reserve north of Amsterdam. The project consists of clustered, hut-like cabins raised on a deck above the boggy terrain, creating an open, communal living space that blends with the natural surroundings. Inspired by Nishizawa’s Moriyama House, each cabin is independent, encouraging interaction with the landscape. Designed with low environmental impact, the buildings use passive climate strategies and green roofs, while the deck integrates trees and shelters wildlife. Built during the pandemic with close involvement from the client, the project was logistically complex, requiring materials to be ferried in and foundations drilled deep into the marshland. Arismeer stands as a thoughtful collaboration rooted in ecological sensitivity, architectural experimentation, and the desire to reconnect with nature.
